Google introduces the Pixel 8a, the latest addition to its Pixel 8 series, offering a budget-friendly option with a refreshed design akin to the Pixel 8 and 8 Pro. Equipped with the latest Tensor G3 chipset, it starts at $499.
Design and Display:
The Pixel 8a maintains its compact form factor, featuring a 6.1-inch OLED screen with 1080p resolution. While the screen refresh rate has been boosted from 90Hz to 120Hz, it might not be immediately noticeable to most users. The regular peak brightness reaches 1400 nits, while HDR content can peak at 2000 nits. Additionally, it boasts IP67 water and dust resistance, making it the sturdiest A series phone, according to Google.
Performance and Software:
Despite its lower price point, the Pixel 8a packs a punch internally. Powered by the same Tensor G3 chip found in the Pixel 8 and 8 Pro, it also features a Titan M2 security coprocessor. Storage options range from 128 GB to 256 GB (UFS 3.1), with a single 8 GB RAM option (LPDDR5X) available. As per tradition, there’s no memory card slot.
As a Google device, the Pixel 8a ships with the latest iteration of pure Android 14, enriched with AI functionalities. These include AI background noise suppression for calls, Magic Eraser, Circle to Search, and more. Google pledges 7 years of OS and security updates, ensuring longevity and reliability for users.
Camera Features:
Regrettably, the camera configuration remains unchanged from last year. The setup includes a 64 MP f1.89 primary camera with OIS and a 13MP f2.2 ultrawide lens. Video capabilities extend to 4K at 60 FPS and 1080p at 240 FPS for slow motion. The 13MP front-facing camera, nestled within a punch-hole cutout, also supports 4K video recording, albeit capped at 30 FPS.
These cameras have various features, including astrophotography timelapse, fused video stabilization, Cinematic Pan, 5x digital zoom, and AI-powered image editing tools.
Battery Life and Pricing:
According to Google, the 4,492 mAh battery is expected to deliver over a day of usage on a single charge. Replenishing this battery is facilitated by 18W wired charging, although by contemporary standards, this speed isn’t deemed particularly rapid. Nevertheless, the device does offer Qi wireless charging support, a notable inclusion for a budget-friendly phone. In terms of pricing, the Google Pixel 8a starts at $499, with the 256 GB variant priced at $599.
