SBP’s Endeavor at the Mobile Commerce Conference
At the 17th International Conference on Mobile Commerce 2024, organized by Total Communications, SBP’s Joint Director, Ahmed Sumair, highlighted the initiative’s significance. The State Bank of Pakistan (SBP), through its Payment System Policy and Oversight Department, is collaborating with banks to enable QR code transactions in cattle markets.
Nationwide Implementation
The SBP aims to streamline transactions by implementing QR code payments in 50 major cattle markets across 15 cities with SBP field offices. Notable cities include Karachi, Lahore, Islamabad, Rawalpindi, Faisalabad, and Hyderabad. The initiative is poised to ease payments for sacrificial animals during Eid.
Facilitating Transactions and Financial Inclusion
By introducing QR code payments, SBP seeks to address various challenges, including the inconvenience of carrying cash and facilitating transactions for cattle farmers. Furthermore, this initiative aligns with SBP’s goal of expanding financial inclusion through the Raast Instant Payment System.
Potential Impact on the Economy
The adoption of QR code payments is expected to revolutionize the payment landscape, offering a cost-effective alternative to traditional point-of-sale (POS) machines. Additionally, it encourages online transactions, thereby reducing reliance on cash in the economy.
Empowering Merchants
QR code payments empower small merchants to receive payments seamlessly through online transactions. Merchants can display QR codes to facilitate real-time and hassle-free payments, enhancing the overall payment experience for consumers.
