Pakistan Railways will receive the first shipment of 230 new high-speed coaches from China in December 2022. According to reports, the Chinese company has signed an agreement with Pakistan to supply luxury and comfortable buses to revive long-distance passenger services. Furthermore, trains can travel at a maximum speed of 160 km/h.
A PR official said the coaches would include 80 air-conditioned and economy class compartments, 30 parlour cars, and 20 vans for luggage and brakes. He said 200 vans would import and 620 bogies will produce at the factory. It was revealed that PR representatives had already traveled to China to inspect bogies worth $149 million.
230 brand-new, passenger coaches:
The Chinese company will manufacture 230 state-of-the-art coaches under a $140 million (roughly Rs. 31 billion) contract, of which 46 will be fully assembled. The remaining 184 will be produced by Chinese expert guidance engineers and technical staff in Pakistan.
Pakistan Railways plans to procure 40 of its 200 high-speed coaches from China by the end of this year. This Chinese company intends to build 800 freight wagons and 20 brake wagons. These wagons move at a train speed of 160 km per hour. Production of 184 coaches will be done in Pakistan under the “Technology Transfer” project. A Chinese company will provide spare parts and raw materials for carriages manufactured in Pakistan (PR carriage factory in Islamabad). Moreover, according to sources, the PR team traveled to China in the second week of August along with 18 officials for design inspections, 20 for other assessments, and training purposes related to technology transfer.
