5G Services in Pakistan: According to the latest reports, a telecom industry delegation recently discussed with the National Assembly’s Steering Committee on Information Technology that launching 5G services in Pakistan would be impossible amid rising electricity prices. In addition, representatives of the telecommunications sector also informed the committee that the profit margin of the telecommunications industry had decreased significantly due to the recent economical condition. Due to this condition, launching 5G services in Pakistan is impossible.

Impossible to launch 5G service in Pakistan:

Due to the severe financial crisis that Pakistan is currently facing, mobile operators cannot even import telecom-related gadgets. The committee was informed that the mobile operators would donate 1.5% of the total profit to the Universal Service Fund. It should be noted here that the letter of credit was not opened. This is a service error. Telecom representatives have asked the commission to send its recommendations to the federal government to solve the problem. IT Ministry officials further discussed the causes of financial crimes. They said that the main reason behind such crimes is illegal SIM cards. Fifty-two thousand such SIM cards have been seized. PTA has launched live biometrics to combat the illegal issuance of SIM cards. Not being able to issue SIM cards with fake fingerprints is good for controlling such crimes.

The PTA officials stated:

Launching 5G services in Pakistan has several challenges and hurdles. The main ones include:

  • low handset and optic fiber cable penetration
  • increasing inflation
  • the low average revenue per user
  • rising operating expenses (OPEX) coupled with high taxation

Many developed countries have already deployed 5G technology. However, Pakistan is plagued with the above challenges in offering the said services. So, these impediments could potentially affect the 5G Launch in Pakistan. The PTA is also said to be working with industry and other stakeholders to provide detailed recommendations on the rollout of 5G in Pakistan. However, to support 5G, the percentage of Fiber-To-The Tower/Site (FTTT/FTTS) needs to be increased. Other technological innovations for broadband proliferation, such as Wi-fi 6E for enhanced latency Augmented and Virtual Reality (AR/VR), must be facilitated.
