What is Keto Diet ?

Keto Diet is a diet plan that mainly focuses on increasing uptake of healthy fats and adequate amounts of proteins and few carbohydrates.

This type of diet’s primary goal is to get calories from fats rather than carbs, its works by depleting the body’s sugar reserves. In this process, individual molecules are produced called Ketones, which are then used as fuel for the body. In short, Fat is a burn which eventually leads to weight loss.

Types of Keto Diet:

There are many different types of Keto diet, but mainly two types are followed, which are

  1. Standard Ketogenic Diet
  2.  Cyclical Ketogenic Diet

The keto diet plan promotes weight loss by boosting metabolism and reducing appetite. In the ketogenic diet plan, hunger-stimulating hormones are concentrates, which leads to weight loss.

Many randomized controlled trials were done on this diet, one of which demonstrated that people lose 5 lbs. more in the keto diet than low-fat diets after six months.

Reduces Facial Problems:

Acne can be caused due to several reasons, but mainly it caused due to the wrong diet or increase blood sugar in the body. High Processed and refined carbohydrate in diet alters the gut bacteria and raises blood sugar, leading to adverse skin reactions. A 2012 study stated that in a ketogenic diet, carbohydrates are reduced, which showed improvement in people’s acne problems.

Risks of Cancers:

Some studies have shown that a Ketogenic diet causes oxidative stress on cancer cells, reducing the risk of specific cancer in some patients.

Improvement of Heart Conditions:

In a ketogenic diet, good healthy fats are consumed, such as from Avocados, which reduces cholesterol. Decreasing the bad cholesterol (LDL) and increasing good cholesterol (HDL) improve cardiovascular conditions.

Ketones produced in Ketogenic Diet are said to be neuroprotective and helps in strengthening nerve cells. Studies are going on to know the benefit of the keto diet in brain patients such as Alzheimer’s disease.

PCOS is a hormonal disorder in females that be can caused due to high carbohydrate diet. The ketogenic diet showed improved results in PCOS people in terms of weight loss, hormone balance, and fasting insulin levels.


Risks of Keto Diet:

The long-term ketogenic diet can harm the body, such as Kidney stones, Mineral and Vitamin deficiencies and Fatty liver, etc.

In the initial days of this diet plan, there are specific side effects commonly known as,

KETO FLU, which incudes Constipation, Fatigue, Low Blood Sugar, Headaches and Nausea, and Exercise Intolerance

BIG NO: Pregnant and lactating mothers with known Kidney or pancreas disease, Insulin-dependent diabetics, or people with Eating disorders.
